Every day, we use various tools in our homes to make our tasks easier, save time, and preserve our energy. These tools range from simple knives to complex washing machines. Understanding how to select, use, and maintain these equipments efficiently is crucial for a smooth-running household.

1 Classification of Equipments

Core Concept: Anything that aids you in doing work is known as an equipment. They increase efficiency and save time and energy.

Equipments are broadly classified into two categories based on their power source:

Electrical Equipments

These require electricity to function. They are highly efficient but consume power.

Examples: Toasters, mixies, immersion rods, irons, refrigerators, geysers, washing machines.

Non-Electrical Equipments

These are manually operated and do not require electricity. They are usually simpler and cost-effective.

Examples: Kitchen utensils, sewing machines, solar cookers, and the "Grameen Sheetal" (a wire-mesh cupboard covered with wet jute cloth used as a non-electrical cooler).

2 Selection of Household Equipments

The market provides a vast range of equipment. Purchasing should never be based merely on trends; it requires careful consideration of several key factors:

  • Need-Based: Buy what you truly need. Don't buy a complex food processor if a simple mixer-grinder meets your family's requirements.
  • Time, Money & Energy Saving: A pressure cooker saves fuel and time. A sharp knife saves human energy compared to a frustratingly blunt one.
  • Easy to Clean: Look for materials like stainless steel or designs like removable crumb trays on toasters for easy maintenance.
  • Safety (ISI Mark): Electrical equipment must have an ISI mark, ensuring it meets safety and quality standards. Look for 3-pin plugs, insulated cords, and no exposed metal.
  • Cost & Guarantee: Balance the cost with functionality. Ensure the equipment comes with a Guarantee (a promise by the manufacturer for efficient performance/free repair for a specified period).
  • After-Sales Service: Check if repair, service, and spare parts are easily available in your local market.

3 Correct Use, Care & Maintenance

Electrical Safety & Maintenance

Never touch equipment with wet hands. Ensure a Mini-Circuit Breaker (MCB) or fuse is installed on the main board to cut off supply during short circuits. Remove plugs before cleaning equipment. Stop using any equipment immediately if it gives a mild shock.

Kitchen Hazards

No Synthetic Clothes: Never wear nylon in the kitchen; it catches fire easily, melts, and sticks to the skin causing deep burns. Use pans with bakelite/wooden handles, or use tongs—never use a sari pallu.

Equipment Specific Care

  • Pressure Cooker: Keep the vent pipe clean for steam flow. Never force the weight open before pressure drops. Replace loose/hard gaskets.
  • LPG Stoves: Turn off cylinder knobs when not in use. Replace cracked rubber tubes instantly.
  • Non-Stick Pans: Avoid metal spoons/ladles and hard scrubbers to prevent damaging the coating.
  • Microwave Ovens: Never use metal containers inside; use only microwave-proof materials.

4 Conservation of Resources

With growing scarcity and rising costs, conserving fuel, electricity, and water is an essential part of household management.

Save FUEL

Clean stove burners. Soak dals/rice before cooking. Use a pressure cooker (with separators for multiple items). Lower the flame after the first whistle. Cover open pans.

Save ELECTRICITY

Avoid frequent opening of the fridge door. Switch off lights/fans when leaving. Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient CFLs or Tube lights.

Save WATER

Reuse fruit-washing water for garden plants. Reuse clothes-washing water for mopping floors. Take a bucket bath instead of a shower. Use a mug while brushing teeth.

Golden Rules & Exam Tips

1 Look for the ISI Mark & Guarantee

Always ensure electrical equipments bear the ISI mark (for safety and quality standardization) and come with a Guarantee card (manufacturer's promise for efficient performance/repair).

2 No Synthetic Clothes in the Kitchen

Never wear synthetic fabrics like nylon while cooking. They catch fire easily, melt, and stick to the skin causing severe, deep burns. Use cotton instead.

3 The Magic of the Pressure Cooker

A pressure cooker saves time, energy, and money (fuel). Always keep its vent pipe clean, use separators to cook multiple dishes at once, and lower the flame after the first whistle.

4 Install an MCB or Fuse

Always ensure fuses or Mini-Circuit Breakers (MCB) are installed on main electric boards. They automatically break the circuit and cut power during short circuits or voltage spikes, preventing fires.
