Lesson 2 Module 1: The Art & Science of Managing Home

Ethics in Daily Life

Textbook Introductory Case: Hari Om & Ramu's Grocery Store

Hari Om opened a grocery store in an upcoming middle-class colony. As business expanded, he hired a young helper named Ramu. Soon Ramu began reporting late, taking excessive time on deliveries, and disappearing to the tea shop. Despite months of counseling, Ramu showed zero sincerity. Hari Om sacked him. The central question: Why is sincerity to work vital, and why does absence of ethical standards cost workers their livelihood?

Core Formula of Ethical Work Performance

Conscious Worker + Ethical Habits + Right Environment = Sustainable Success
1

What Are Ethics?

The word ethics deals with moral issues and with right and wrong behaviour. Ethics tell us about our moral duties and obligations so that our behaviour at work or at home is right, truthful and just.

A. Personal / Family Ethics

  • Honesty & Truthfulness
  • Respect for Self & Others
  • Respect for Time
  • Sincerity
  • Courtesy & Politeness

B. Workplace Professional Ethics

  • Regularity & Punctuality
  • Confidentiality
  • Loyalty
  • Cordial Relations
  • Willingness to Learn

2

Need for Ethics: The Work Situation Triad

Every productive enterprise consists of three interdependent components: Work, Worker, and Workplace.

W

Work

The task that must be performed efficiently and honestly.

R

Worker

The human whose attitude and ethics determine success or failure.

P

Workplace

Physical setting, tools and storage systems.

The Worker is the central determinant. An ethical skilled worker coordinates work and inspires colleagues. A disloyal worker (like Ramu) destroys the enterprise.

3

Seven Major Ethical Problems

1. Irregularity and Lack of Punctuality — late rising at home; absenteeism and late arrival at work.
2. Disloyalty and Dishonesty — stealing, accepting bribes, leaking confidential information.
3. Lack of Sincerity and Commitment — doing the bare minimum, treating work as a burden.
4. Discourtesy and Rudeness — harsh language, arrogance, failure to maintain cordial relations.
5. Neglect of Cleanliness and Order — untidy workstations and chaotic storage.
6. Unwillingness to Learn or Improve — resistance to new methods and skill stagnation.
7. Corruption and Abuse of Authority — misuse of position, nepotism, atmosphere of fear.

4

Code of Ethics for Good Living

  • Be polite, patient, courteous and respectful to all.
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the task.

  • Be loyal to the organisation and to family values.
  • Keep the workplace and home clean and organised.
  • Be willing to learn continuously and accept new responsibilities.
  • Reject bribes, favouritism and any form of corruption.
  • Respect the dignity of every form of labour.

5

Organisational / Family Level

  • Transparent systems and accountability
  • Recognition of ethical behaviour
  • Training and continuous sensitisation
