A job application is a formal one-page letter accompanying résumé/CV: sender info, date, employer info, salutation, opening (job + source), middle (qualifications/achievements), closing (enthusiasm + interview request), Yours sincerely. Tailor each application; highlight education and non-work skills for freshers. Résumé = 1-2 pages, American, customizable, bullet points. CV = comprehensive British-style life document. Résumé sections: heading, personal details, employment objective, education, experience, special skills, references. Cover letter is a sales letter — grab attention, prove qualification, request interview. Proofread everything.
The job application is perhaps the most important piece of writing for each one of us. With increasing competition in the job market, it is especially important to craft an impressive résumé or curriculum vitae (CV). In India, we often use the word 'bio-data' for a CV. This unit teaches how to write good job applications — a crucial first step in seeking employment. A well-crafted job application can open doors for you.
Learning outcomes: Recognise important components of a job application; compose different kinds of job application; create covering letters for different requirements; prepare good résumés and CVs; assess use of technology in communicating effectively.
A job application is a formal letter sent to a potential employer applying for a specific job position. It usually accompanies your résumé or CV and highlights your qualifications and interest in the position.
A recent high school graduate applies expressing interest in Store Assistant position from Reliance Smart Careers website. Despite no prior work experience, cites school cultural festival experience coordinating vendors, managing inventory, setting up event spaces — organizational, communication, teamwork skills. Attracted by company's commitment to quality products and exceptional service. Available for interview; provides phone and email. Closes with enthusiasm for customer service and retail.
Job applications accompany résumé or CV. Terms are often used interchangeably but serve different purposes.
Résumé: Concise, one to two pages; brief overview of skills, experiences, education relevant to job.
CV: More detailed and longer; entire career including education, achievements, publications, awards, affiliations; often no page limit.
Résumé: Primarily USA for jobs outside academia/research/medicine; tailored for specific positions.
CV: Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia; USA for academic/scientific/research positions; comprehensive career path.
Résumé: Work experience, skills, education, achievements; career objective/summary; results and accomplishments. Highly customizable per application.
CV: Academic history, publications, research, grants, licences, awards — detailed field information. Less customization due to comprehensive nature.
Résumé: Bullet points, varied layouts and designs to stand out.
CV: Standard chronological format; completeness and clarity over design flair.
CV is becoming outdated; more companies demand résumés for clearer screening. Textbook concentrates on writing good résumés as they are crisper and role-specific.
Includes: Name, Address, Date of birth; Key Qualifications (child education training, CELTA, 8 years teaching, languages); Education (BA English Literature, Fergusson College 1998); Work Experience (Assistant Teacher Abhinav Vidyalaya 1989-90; Classroom Teacher GMIS Jakarta 1990-96 teaching English, Science, History, Geography, Health; CAS Club IB programme); Reference (Principal Mr. Jakos Carlos).
Contact: 275 Tabot Street Pune, phone, georged@gmail.com. Employment Objective: Financial research assistant leading to corporate finance management. Personal Details: Birth 29-08-1976. Education: BBA Finance 1998 Pune University (3.88 GPA). Employment: First Bank Research Assistant May 1998-April 2000 — developed computer model for long range planning. Special Skills: Associate Editor Business School Newsletter — articles on financial planning.
Study the job you are applying for. Ask what information about you would be most important to an employer. Decide details to include and how to present them.
A résumé must be: attractive, well-organised, easy to read, and free of errors.
Common format sections:
A cover letter must precede CV or résumé. Sample: Milind Padhye, New Delhi — applies for "Personal & Unit Assistant" at British Council (ref: Pioneer ad Sept 18, 2004). Highlights 9+ years Word Processing, Database, DTP; Science graduation; English editing of computer books; PC hardware skills. Requests interview at convenient date.
The letter of application is essentially a sales letter. It must:
Provide: (1) Job title and how you heard about it; (2) Qualifications in summary — stress education/work experience as appropriate, refer to résumé for details; (3) Where you can be reached and interview availability.
The module sets real-world application tasks: apply to Manyavar Lajpat Nagar as Sales Assistant highlighting fashion interest and interpersonal skills; apply to Reliance Jio as Customer Service Representative with communication and problem-solving examples; apply to Republic Bharat as Content Writer with writing samples and current affairs passion; apply to Career Launcher as Office Assistant demonstrating organisation and computer proficiency. Each task requires both application letter and tailored résumé.
26.2: Résumé is 1-2 pages; CV is longer without strict limit. Résumés used in USA for general jobs; CVs in Europe/Asia and US academia. Résumé focuses work/skills/achievements; CV adds publications, research, grants. Résumés highly customizable; CVs less so due to comprehensiveness.
26.3: Heading uses centre, bold, underline, font size. Personal details omitted if negative impact. Employment objective states career direction; exclude if unclear. List education first if stronger; experience first if more job history.
26.4: Cover letter objectives: attention, qualification, interview request. Identify job by title and source; summarise qualifications; state contact and availability.
George's résumé demonstrates the crisp American-style format: centred contact block without date; clear Employment Objective linking financial research to management ambition; Personal Details (birth date); Education with major (Finance), minor (Computer Science), and GPA (3.88/4.0); Employment Experience at First Bank as Research Assistant developing long-range planning computer model; Special Skills showing editorial work on Business School Newsletter with two published articles on financial planning and survey duties. The textbook notes that CV and résumé both include personal details, training, education, and work experience — but differ in format, headings, sequence, and length. Since CVs include more headings, the module concentrates on résumés for practical job seeking.
