The environment encompasses all living and non-living things occurring naturally on Earth. It is a study of the inter-relationship between biotic (living: birds, animals, plants, forests) and abiotic (non-living: air, water, rocks, sun) components.

Environmental Problems: Pollution (Air, Water, Noise)

Pollution is an undesirable change in the physical, chemical, or biological quality of a natural resource or ecosystem, caused by pollutants.

Pollution Type 1

Air Pollution

Introduction of harmful chemicals, particulate matter, or biological material into the atmosphere.

Sources: Power plant smoke, automobile exhaust, landfill methane, agricultural pesticides.

Effects: Respiratory diseases, cardiac conditions.

Water Pollution

Deleterious change in soil quality, reducing organic matter (humus) and crop yield potential.

  • Causes: Excessive chemical fertilizers/pesticides (acidification, heavy metals like Cadmium/Lead), waterlogging from excessive irrigation, overgrazing.
  • Impact: Groundwater contamination, desertification, loss of green cover.

Operational Steps to Achieve Sustainable Development:

1. Renewable Substitutes

2. Recycle & Reuse

Re-process materials like paper to save forest timber, and harvest rainwater to replenish depleted aquifers.

3. Reduce (Economize)

Restrain consumption to basic needs—walk instead of driving, climb stairs, turn off unused electricity.
